Designed by architect Abhimanyu Dalal, this New Delhi farmhouse is a sprawling 24000 sq. ft. structure located in New Delhi. The structure itself is defined by its iconic roof featuring two slanted sections separated at the center, bold concrete and glass blocks that protrude outwards and a rich green landscape that surrounds the home.
The natural and built forms live in harmony and create the foundation for the aesthetic of the interiors – a clean and uncluttered space with a curated identity. Designed as an extension of the personalities residing here the space is a blend of classic and contemporary sensibilities.
The ground floor is designed as a plush and contemporary entertainment space with modern elements. Full height solid oak wood doors, combination of white and textured walls and a rich yet subtle marble flooring dominate the aesthetics of the space. With full height glazings along the north elevation of the house, giving a sense of lightness, the residents can enjoy the tastefully designed landscape. Along with housing the formal and family living rooms, the dining room, Puja room and study, an open passage takes you to the guest suite which includes two regular and one master bedroom with its own private living and dining spaces.
The most dramatic feature in this house is the double stringer staircase that runs between the three floors. Largely clad in wood, the treads are in a subtle grey stone. The light detail that runs along the inner edge of the stringer enhances the boldness of it’s form. Up the spiral staircase takes you to the primary living space for the family. The first floor includes 4 bedrooms, a living and dining space and a library. It has a contemporary aesthetic using traditional Indian materials like terrazzo and brass. The living and dining is an amorphous space partially divided by a glass shaft with a skylight where natural light pours in through the day. Right next door is the library cum study corner that overlooks one of the terraced grass roofs. The three bedroom suites have a distinct and sophisticated feel with solid oak wood panelling, lightly textured and clean wall and modern to contemporary furniture pieces. Each room has its own character, shape and palette suited to the needs of the residents.
An earthy basement is an informal space for entertainment or for the residents and their guests to unwind. A large inviting seating arrangement, with a projector at the center, dominates the space. A reclaimed solid wood bar counter set against a backdrop of grey stone and corten steel shelving wrapped with focussed statement lights give the space a bold yet intimate feeling. Beyond the bar is a quieter seating area that flows into the deck and outdoor swimming pool. This open space with solid wood furniture is designed as a tranquil and fluid area that also connects to the health center. Consisting of a dedicated salon, two shower rooms, a massage room and a fully equipped gym, this area is meant to serve a source of rejuvenation. A unified colour palette runs through the entire basement floor that further enhances the fluidity of the space. The project is looking at completion later this year.
